Piet Mondrian

Piet Mondrian

Piet Mondrian died in 1944, having created about 250 paintings in his lifetime.
The paintings that Piet Mondrian is most famous for are rectangles of white and primary colors, dissected by black lines.   He did not always paint this way, however.   Mondrian’s first paintings depicted scenes found in real life and they were done in a style similar to impressionism.   As his style grew and changed, he stopped using any colors besides the three primaries: red, yellow, and blue.  Mondrian was known for taking his time when painting these simple canvases.  He painted and repainted the geometric shapes and vertical and horizontal lines over and over until he achieved the exact effect he wanted.  He was also very precise in how he painted the canvas as well.  Each line and each square was painted using different effects and brushstrokes.
This month in Art Lit, students will create their own "Mondrian-ish" pieces.
Watch for their masterpieces in the hallways!
